North Carolina kept its season alive Saturday, defeating USC to force a winner-take-all game Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels now have an opportunity to advance to Omaha with one more victory on their home field tomorrow at 3 PM. Just before Game 2 of the Super Regional against USC started, the Diamond Heels got some big-time portal news, landing one of the most coveted middle infielders in the portal, former William and Mary shortstop Jamie Laskofski.
Laskofski is a 2027 draft-eligible shortstop who, according to Baseball America, is one of the top middle infield prospects for that ’27 draft. The 6’.5” (make sure you see the decimal… He measures six foot and a half inch tall. We don’t cheat the players on their height over here) lefty hitting transfer was recently named the 2026 CAA player of the year. Laskofski earned that award with a season where he slashed .355/.464/.665. That’s an OPS of 1.129 from the shortstop position. He had 13 homers, 12 doubles, and 6 triples. The best part about Laskofski is that even with those power numbers, he walked 41 times while having only 24 strikeouts. Add in 36 stolen bases, and Jamie brings another dynamic element to North Carolina's roster heading into the season.

With speculation that SS Jake Schaffner, Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist (the nation’s top SS), will be poached from the Heels by the draft, Forbes and company needed to have a sound option at the most important position in the infield. What better way to make sure that position is squared away than bringing in another Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist in Laskofski? Even if Schaffner doesn’t choose to sign in the draft this year, one of Laskofski’s greatest tools is his defensive versatility. He is a plus defender at second and third base, with college-level experience at those positions as well.
All in all, UNC Baseball has an absolute stud coming in to keep our string of solid middle infielders going. Following on the heels of the likes of Serretti, Wilkerson, Madera, and most likely Schaffner, Laskofski will look to continue a long line of Diamond Heel shortstop excellence.
