2025 ACC Midfielder of the Year Kate Galica Transfers to Carolina

A Major Addition for Carolina.

To be completely transparent, this is one I meant to get to much sooner. When former Virginia midfielder Kate Galica announced her commitment to Carolina Lacrosse on Instagram, it was the kind of news that deserved immediate attention. Then Omaha happened, life got busy, and it slipped through the shuffle. Better late than never, though, because this is a massive addition for a North Carolina program that is already positioned to make another serious run after falling to Northwestern in the national championship game, 14 to 11.

One of the Nation's Top Midfielders

Galica arrives in Chapel Hill as one of the most accomplished midfielders in the country. The 5-foot-8 rising senior was the 2025 ACC Midfielder of the Year at Virginia, becoming the first Cavalier in program history to win the honor. She was also a 2025 IWLCA First Team All-American, a Nike Lacrosse First Team All-American, a USA Lacrosse Second Team All-American, and an All-ACC First Team selection. Over three seasons at Virginia, Galica totaled 104 goals, 32 assists, and 136 points in 56 games. Her best offensive season came in 2025, when she started all 19 games and finished with 47 goals, nine assists, and 56 points.

Why Galica Is a Perfect Fit at North Carolina

What makes this addition so important for Carolina is that Galica brings more than scoring. She is an elite draw control presence, which should immediately help the Tar Heels in the middle of the field. In 2025, she set Virginia’s single-season draw control record with 179, then followed it up in 2026 by becoming the Cavaliers’ all-time leader in career draw controls. She also finished the 2026 season with 36 goals, 17 assists, 144 draw controls, 21 caused turnovers, and 32 ground balls. Pairing Galica with Eliza Osburn gives Carolina one of the most talented midfield combinations in the country, and her experience with players like Osburn, Chloe Humphrey, Sam Forrest, and assistant coach Marie McCool through the U.S. Women’s National Training Team should only make the transition smoother. For a Tar Heel team trying to take the final step back to a national title, Galica is the type of addition that can make an immediate difference.
