Cooper Nicholson - 4-11 (.364), 2 HR, 4 RBIs, 2 walks
In recent weeks, Nicholson has been one of the most productive and consistent bats in the Tar Heel lineup. After a slow start to the season, it seems that the Iowa native has found his stride, as evidenced by his move up the lineup. Scott Forbes has stated numerous times that Nicholson was UNC’s best hitter in the fall, and of late, he’s showing a great blend of both power and plate discipline. Over the weekend, he hit his team-leading 12th and 13th home runs of the season while also making a couple of fantastic plays over at third base.
Colin Hynek - 4-10 (.400), 3 RBIs, 1 walk
In the 6th inning of Sunday’s game, UNC was deadlocked in a 2-2 ballgame when Colin Hynek came to the plate. He proceeded to hit a shot into left field, scoring Cooper Nicholson, and the Tar Heels never looked back. In the 7th inning, Hynek recorded another hit, scoring two more runs and extending UNC’s lead. The catcher was paramount in helping the Heels get the sweep over Pitt in the regular-season home finale.
Jason DeCaro - 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 hits, 7 Ks, 1 walk, win
The series win over Pitt marked UNC’s eighth straight series win. A large part of the success can be attributed to DeCaro setting the tone for the weekend early. His rough midseason patch is a distant memory, and the junior ace is again showing why he’s considered a top pitching prospect in the upcoming MLB Draft. In recent weeks, DeCaro has seen an uptick in strikeouts as well as improved command. If it continues, the Tar Heels will be primed for another deep postseason run.
